New roofs
A re-roof is the one job where the whole thing comes off and you get to see what has been holding the water out. Most of the time the tiles or slates are the least of it. The battens have gone where the felt tore, the felt itself has perished at the eaves where the sun got to it, and there is a rafter end that has been damp for a decade under a bit of lead that was dressed too short. Stripping it back is the point at which all of that becomes visible and fixable, and the point at which an honest roofer either tells you or quietly covers it back up. Johnny photographs the stripped roof before anything new goes on, so the thing you are paying for is a matter of record rather than a matter of trust.

Slate or tile
Slate is lighter, thinner and holds a crisper line, and it suits the older houses around Tonbridge. Concrete and clay tiles cover more area per unit and cost less to lay. The existing roof structure often decides it for you.
What comes off first
Tiles, battens, felt, then whatever is underneath. The strip tells you the real scope, which is why the written price separates the known work from the make-good.

Excellent service from Johnny and his team. Good communication and understanding on the initial survey and quote. Great work by his professional and courteous crew, with constant updates verbally and with photos as the work progressed. They made sure the site was clean and safe each evening and especially on the last day.
