A picture of the ceiling, or of the roof from the garden, tells Johnny more than a phone call does.

Johnny is up on roofs through the day, so he reads these in the evening. You will hear back that night or first thing the next morning.

Johnny provided an excellent service with what proved to be a bigger job than was anticipated. He was careful to explain exactly what they were doing & provided detailed before & after photos to confirm. He always kept me informed of their schedule & his team of men were considerate & helpful. I would not hesitate ro recommend him for roofing work & also more general building work, with which he is also experienced & knowledgeable.

This company has done three separate repairs for us. Jonathan is reliable and gives detailed information about the work needed. He explained unfamiliar terms and provided photos of the work carried out as we were unable to see the work area from the ground. We would recommend him for any roofing work.

Johnny, Henry and the team were fantastic. They repaired our soffits, fascias, gutters, some windows, replaced a number of roof tiles, a couple of locks, did external painting of the whole house and some internal rendering & painting. All was done to a very high standard with great attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble. At all times the guys were punctual, polite and helpful and we were kept well informed of progress throughout. An excellent service - thank you! Leisa G-N

Excellent service from Johnny and his team. Good communication and understanding on the initial survey and quote. Great work by his professional and courteous crew, with constant updates verbally and with photos as the work progressed. They made sure the site was clean and safe each evening and especially on the last day. As a client I was kept up-to-date by Johnny at all stages, and that drives confidence. I would very happily recommend 'Tonbridge Defender Roofing Services' for any and all roofing works, and would defenitely use them again.

Flat roofs

Most flat roofs in this part of Kent are garages and extensions, and most of them fail in one of three ways. The covering splits, usually at a seam or where it turns up a wall. The falls go wrong, so water sits in a pond instead of running off, and a pond finds every weakness there is. Or the edge details let go, which is the trim, the drip and the upstand rather than the middle of the roof at all. Those are three different repairs and only one of them needs the whole roof taken off. Johnny will tell you which one you have, and if the deck underneath has gone soft he will say so before he quotes, because a new covering laid over a rotten deck is money spent twice.

The lifespan question comes up on every job. His own site puts a flat roof at typically 20-30 years and that is the honest range for a covering that was laid properly and has somewhere to drain.

  • Flat Roof Replacement

In his own words, from his own flat roof page.

GRP fibreglass

Laid wet and cured in place, so there are no joints to fail across the field of the roof. His own page puts it at up to forty years with minimal maintenance. It wants a dry day and a sound deck, and it is the more expensive of the two systems he offers.

Torch-on felt

His own page calls it the more affordable option, and it is. Three layers bonded down with heat, and the seams are where the attention goes. Done well it is a long-lived roof; done in a hurry it fails at the laps.

Repair or replace

A single split in an otherwise sound covering is a repair. A covering that is crazed all over, or one that ponds because the falls were never right, is a replacement. Anyone who tells you the answer without getting on the roof is guessing.
