The roofs round here
Paddock Wood and Kings Hill are largely twentieth and twenty-first century, and that shows up as a different job mix. Far fewer four-flue chimney stacks, far less lead, and a great deal more flat roof: garages, side extensions, porches, dormer tops and the single-storey rear additions that go on almost every house of that age sooner or later. Flat roofs fail on a clock rather than in a storm. A felt covering laid in the nineties is at the end of its life now, a GRP one laid in a hurry on a damp deck starts crazing at about fifteen years, and the falls that were never quite right from the first day are the reason there is a pond in the middle of it. Around West Malling the older centre puts some genuinely old roofs back into the mix, so it is the one part of the patch where a peg-tile repair and a garage flat roof can be the same morning.
