Your town, your number, and a picture of the problem if you can get one.

A picture of the ceiling, or of the roof from the garden, tells Johnny more than a phone call does.

Johnny is up on roofs through the day, so he reads these in the evening. You will hear back that night or first thing the next morning.

Johnny provided an excellent service with what proved to be a bigger job than was anticipated. He was careful to explain exactly what they were doing & provided detailed before & after photos to confirm. He always kept me informed of their schedule & his team of men were considerate & helpful. I would not hesitate ro recommend him for roofing work & also more general building work, with which he is also experienced & knowledgeable.

This company has done three separate repairs for us. Jonathan is reliable and gives detailed information about the work needed. He explained unfamiliar terms and provided photos of the work carried out as we were unable to see the work area from the ground. We would recommend him for any roofing work.

Johnny, Henry and the team were fantastic. They repaired our soffits, fascias, gutters, some windows, replaced a number of roof tiles, a couple of locks, did external painting of the whole house and some internal rendering & painting. All was done to a very high standard with great attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble. At all times the guys were punctual, polite and helpful and we were kept well informed of progress throughout. An excellent service - thank you! Leisa G-N

Excellent service from Johnny and his team. Good communication and understanding on the initial survey and quote. Great work by his professional and courteous crew, with constant updates verbally and with photos as the work progressed. They made sure the site was clean and safe each evening and especially on the last day. As a client I was kept up-to-date by Johnny at all stages, and that drives confidence. I would very happily recommend 'Tonbridge Defender Roofing Services' for any and all roofing works, and would defenitely use them again.

Chimney repairs

A chimney is the most exposed masonry on a house. It has weather on four sides, nothing above it, and a temperature difference running through the middle whenever the fire is lit. So it goes before the rest of the roof does, and it usually goes in a predictable order. The flaunching cracks first, which is the sloped mortar cap the pots sit in, and once it is cracked the water gets into the top of the stack. Then the pointing between the bricks starts to wash out, a course at a time, from the top down. Then the lead where the stack passes through the slope gets tired, and that is the point at which it stops being a chimney problem and starts being a stain on a bedroom ceiling. Caught at the flaunching stage it is a day's work from a scaffold. Left until the stack is moving it is a rebuild.

Search for chimney work around Tonbridge and almost everything that comes back is a sweep. Sweeping and repairing are different trades and a sweep will tell you the same.

In his own words, from his own /chimney-repairs page.

Cracked flaunching

It is the sloped mortar cap that beds the pots and sheds water off the top of the stack. When it cracks, water runs into the brickwork instead of off it, and everything below gets wetter and colder. It is cheap to renew and expensive to ignore.

Scaffold or ladder

Anything above repointing one or two courses wants a scaffold, and a stack rebuild always does. It goes in the written price rather than appearing afterwards.

Taking one down

A stack serving nothing can come down to below the roof line and be slated or tiled over. It is often the cheaper answer on a chimney that has stopped earning its keep.
